Il est sous forme de  réalisme magique. Trois personnages, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie et Shaceng protéger le moine Tang qui fait le pèlerinage à l'ouest, pendant quatre-vingt-un an de la souffrance, contre le demon  Xiangyao, enfin à l'ouest, quand tout est dit et fait, il voie le Bouddha.
